AZuR highlights sustainable tyre solutions for the commercial vehicle industry

The Alliance for the Future of Tyres (AZuR) will showcase the environmental and economic benefits of retreaded commercial vehicle tyres at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover, Germany. From 15–20 September 2026 (Press Day: 14 September), the organisation will welcome visitors at Hall 12, Stand A55, where it will present how retreading contributes to a more sustainable and resource-efficient transport industry.

With this year's theme, "WE DELIVER", IAA Transportation focuses on the transformation of road freight transport towards climate neutrality. According to AZuR, retreaded truck tyres play an important role in achieving these goals by reducing raw material consumption, lowering CO₂ emissions and supporting a circular economy.

More Than 60% Lower CO₂ Emissions

AZuR cites a life cycle assessment conducted by Germany's Fraunhofer UMSICHT research institute, which found that retreading a commercial vehicle tyre generates more than 60% less CO₂ emissions compared to manufacturing a new tyre. On average, each retreaded truck tyre saves approximately 135 kilograms of CO₂, while requiring around two-thirds fewer raw materials and 50% less energy during production.

These environmental savings make retreading one of the most effective strategies for reducing the carbon footprint of commercial vehicle fleets while extending the service life of valuable tyre casings.

Sustainability Meets Economic Efficiency

In addition to environmental advantages, AZuR emphasises the financial benefits for fleet operators. Modern premium retreaded tyres are manufactured in accordance with the UNECE Regulation No. 109 (ECE R109) and undergo comprehensive quality and safety inspections. As a result, high-quality retreaded tyres can deliver performance, durability and reliability comparable to new tyres while significantly reducing operating costs.

Because truck tyre casings can often be retreaded multiple times, fleet operators can maximise the value of each tyre throughout its lifecycle and reduce their total cost per kilometre.

Circular Economy Gains Momentum

As sustainability requirements continue to increase across Europe's transport sector, retreading is becoming an increasingly important element of circular economy strategies. By extending tyre life and reducing the demand for new raw materials, retreading helps transport companies improve their environmental performance without compromising safety or operational efficiency.

IAA Transportation 2026 will provide an important platform for industry experts, fleet operators, tyre manufacturers and policymakers to discuss the future of sustainable mobility and the growing role of retreaded tyres in commercial transport.
