Continental EcoContact 7 Chosen as OE Tyre for the New Škoda Elroq
Continental has secured another important original equipment (OE) contract in the rapidly growing electric vehicle segment. The company will supply its EcoContact 7 summer tyre as standard equipment for the all-electric Škoda Elroq, further strengthening its position as a leading development partner for European vehicle manufacturers.
The Czech automaker has approved the Continental EcoContact 7 in two 20-inch sizes: 235/50 R20 for the front axle and 255/45 R20 for the rear axle. Both tyres feature Continental's integrated FR rim protection, helping to reduce the risk of wheel damage during everyday driving, particularly when encountering curbs in urban environments.
A key innovation of the EcoContact 7 is its Aerodimple technology, inspired by the aerodynamic surface structure of a golf ball. Small dimples integrated into the tyre sidewalls reduce air turbulence around the rotating wheel, lowering aerodynamic drag and contributing to improved vehicle efficiency. For battery-electric vehicles such as the Škoda Elroq, even small reductions in energy consumption can translate into increased driving range.
Beyond aerodynamic improvements, Continental has focused on minimizing rolling resistance through an optimized rubber compound and advanced tyre construction. Lower rolling resistance reduces the amount of energy required to keep the vehicle moving, helping electric vehicles maximise battery efficiency while also reducing operating costs. At the same time, the EcoContact 7 has been engineered for high mileage, making it suitable for long-term everyday use.
Noise reduction was another important development target. Engineers optimized the spacing and angles of the tread blocks to minimise rolling noise, particularly at lower urban speeds where tyre noise becomes more noticeable in electric vehicles due to the absence of engine sound. This contributes to a quieter driving experience for occupants while also reducing external noise for pedestrians and surrounding communities.
The original equipment approval for the Škoda Elroq further expands Continental's growing portfolio of electric vehicle partnerships. As automakers increasingly prioritise energy efficiency, range optimisation and sustainability, tyre technology has become a critical component in overall vehicle performance.
