Evonik Expands Sustainable Silica Portfolio with ISCC PLUS-Certified ULTRASIL® eCO in EMEA

Evonik has reached another milestone in its sustainability strategy by launching commercial production of ULTRASIL® eCO, a circular precipitated silica manufactured under the internationally recognized ISCC PLUS certification scheme. The production takes place at the company's Adapazarı facility in Türkiye, marking Evonik's first ISCC PLUS-certified silica plant in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

The certification enables Evonik to offer tyre and rubber manufacturers a silica solution produced using the mass balance approach, in which certified circular feedstocks are allocated throughout the production process while maintaining identical material performance and quality.

ULTRASIL® eCO allows manufacturers to increase the share of verified circular content in tyres and technical rubber products without requiring changes to existing formulations or manufacturing processes. As demand grows for traceable and lower-carbon materials throughout the automotive supply chain, certified raw materials are becoming increasingly important for both tyre manufacturers and OEMs.

According to Evonik, the certification of the Adapazarı site strengthens regional supply security while expanding the company's global portfolio of sustainable silica products. The project was completed through close collaboration between the local production team and Evonik's sustainability specialists to ensure full compliance with ISCC PLUS requirements.

Anna Kunze, Global Marketing Director Tire at Evonik's Smart Effects business line, said the new production capacity enables the company to deliver circular silica solutions at industrial scale while strengthening the resilience of its global supply network. Roland Krafczyk, Global Head Applied Technology for Tire & Oral, added that the certification demonstrates Evonik's commitment to providing credible and scalable circular material solutions for customers worldwide.

Silica has become one of the most important reinforcing fillers in modern passenger car tyres, particularly for low rolling resistance compounds. Sustainable silica solutions such as ULTRASIL® eCO support the tyre industry's broader efforts to reduce CO₂ emissions and increase the use of renewable and circular raw materials while maintaining safety, durability and wet grip performance.

As regulatory requirements and sustainability targets continue to evolve across Europe, ISCC PLUS-certified materials are expected to play an increasingly significant role in future tyre manufacturing and supply chains.
