VMI introduces new automation solutions for the RETRAXX retreading system

VMI Group has unveiled new automation solutions for its RETRAXX tire retreading system, aiming to improve productivity, quality and process consistency in the retreading industry. The latest enhancements include an automatic splice unit and automatic recipe loading, representing the next step in VMI's strategy to further automate tire retreading operations.

Retreading remains an important pillar of the circular economy, extending the service life of truck and bus tires while significantly reducing raw material consumption and CO₂ emissions compared with manufacturing new tires. However, many retreading facilities continue to rely heavily on skilled manual labor, which is becoming increasingly difficult to recruit.

To address these challenges, VMI is expanding the automation capabilities of its RETRAXX platform. Building on the automated wingformer setting introduced in 2024, the new system automatically positions the wingformers for the selected tire specification, reducing operator intervention and shortening setup times. The newly introduced automatic splice unit further automates the tread application process, while automatic recipe loading helps ensure that production parameters are applied consistently across every tire.

According to VMI, the new automation features offer several key benefits, including reduced operator dependency, greater production uniformity, improved retread quality and increased manufacturing efficiency. By minimizing manual adjustments, the system also helps reduce the risk of process variations and supports more consistent product quality.

The company will showcase the new automation technologies during The Tire Cologne 2026, where visitors will be able to see live demonstrations of the automatic splice unit. VMI experts will also present the latest developments in retreading automation during a technical presentation at the exhibition.

With these latest innovations, VMI continues to strengthen its position as a leading supplier of advanced tire manufacturing and retreading equipment, supporting tire retreaders worldwide in improving efficiency while advancing more sustainable tire lifecycle management.
